Rory McIlroy opened the 2020 season in imperious form: 6 PGA competitions, 6 top 10s, and a playoff win at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China. On top of this, McIlroy had won the PGA Player of the Year for the third time, regaining his world #1 ranking from the then-injured Brooks Koepka, and looked sure to be in for another good shot at the first major of the season – The Masters.
